Title: |
Koala lookout |
Location: |
Warrnambool Coastal Park (specifically Philip's Island) |
Country: |
Australia |
Subject notes: |
Koalas spend three fourths of their day sleeping due to the low nutritional value of their primary food, Eucalyptus leaves. Hunted almost to extinction for their fur, koalas are having trouble making a comeback due to the amount of remaining suitable habitat. Here, on Philip's island, the forest is intact, the cars are forced to drive slowly, and no dogs are allowed. Locally, they are over populated, and to keep trees from becoming leafless, individuals are removed to other places in Australia to keep the island's food resources within sustainable levels for the remaining koala population. This particular koala seems to have a wonderful air of wisdom and watchfulness. |
