The vibrant orange of Uluru (Ayer's Rock) shows its different shades. The huge ancient ripples in its form are scaled against a tree in the foreground.
Title: Uluru's rock waves
Location: Uluru (Ayer's Rock)
Country: Australia
Subject notes: Uluru, otherwise known as Ayer's Rock, is a sacred site for the people that have inhabited the area for tens of thousands of years. The rocks protrude through the center of the red desert as a result of a folding of the lower layer of original bedrock below the current surface, now exposed by the erosion of the flat surface that lies above the lower folded layers. The slow and even erosion that is occurring on Uluru and the neighboring Olgas, is mostly caused by the periodic rains, causing large, smoothly curved shoots, waves, and sometimes a series of waterfalls and pools.
